Walking through the bakery of one of my favorite grocery stores, I saw cheese straws. I immediately though this would be a great snack to sit and eat in front of the TV, or to take out when we have guests that arrive unannounced (FYI – these are my favorite kind of guests, true friends don’t need to make appointments, they just show up.)
In my search to learn more about the photography I took all the “pre-oven” shots, I also took some shots of when the straws came out of the oven. Johan normally takes the best photos and I had to make sure I had a couple of good shots that I could use. He took the photos and when I turned around I saw an empty cheese straw container. Where are the straws I asked? Johan, with a sweet smile and crumbs on his face tried to look innocent. For me that was the last straw (pun intended.) I banned him from the kitchen. What will my uninvited guests eat?
To try to make up he promised to make bread sticks (as oppose to cheese straws) that will top mine anyway. Keep your eyes on the blog; “real breadsticks” will be on the table soon.
Ingredients
- 1 pack frozen puff pastry
- 1 tablespoon (15 ml) melted butter
- 1 tablespoon (15 ml) parsley, finely chopped
- ⅛ teaspoon (.5 ml) chili flakes
- ⅛ teaspoon (.5 ml) paprika
- ½ cup (125 ml) cheese – finely grated
Directions
1 Allow the puff pastry to thaw (about 25 minutes)
2 Heat the oven to 425° F. Prep, measure and weigh all ingredients and set it aside.
3 Brush the melted butter on the puff pastry. Add other ingredients to the puff pastry.
4 Cut the pastry with a pizza roller in strips. Twist the pastry strips and place on a prepared baking sheet. Add back cheese that might fall off when the dough is twisted.
5 Bake 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown.
6 Eat and enjoy!
TIPS
1 Freshly grated cheese sticks better than store grated cheese.
2 Use any of your favorite toppings on the straws e.g. finely chopped olives, and feta cheese or sun dried tomatoes etc.
I think Johan takes after me.It looks so inviting and appetising, that I also would have eaten them -just to make sure the quality is good enough for friends arriving unexpectedly. Log his comments with mine.
